Corrections

Every error that reached a reader, what it cost them, and what changed. In full, and permanently.

No corrections have been published.

That is a statement about how new this site is, not about how careful it is. There has not yet been enough traffic for a reader to find an error, and a calculator that has not been checked by strangers has not really been checked. Read this page again in six months: an empty log then would be worth something, and a log that first appeared then would be worth nothing.

What gets recorded here

A correction is an error that reached a reader: a wrong rate, a wrong answer, or a statement of fact that was not true, on a page that was live. Each entry records what was wrong, roughly how far out the figure was, what caused it, what changed, and how it came to light. Entries are never removed and never quietly edited — the page is published from a file in version control, so its own history is auditable.

What does not get recorded here

  • Anything fixed before launch. Two rounding defects were found and fixed in the tax engine during verification, before this site existed. Nobody ever saw a figure produced by them, so they are not corrections — they are in the engine’s own verification log, where a reviewer can find them.
  • A new tax year. Updating rates when they change is maintenance, not a correction. Freshness is reported by the last-verified stamp on each methodology page, currently .
  • Wording, layout and design changes. If the number was right, it was right.

Reporting an error

If a figure on this site disagrees with gov.uk, or with a calculation you have checked by hand, that is worth reporting and it will be published here whatever the cause turns out to be — including when the answer is that the site was right.

If you would rather not send anything, the alternative that costs you nothing is to check the methodology page for the calculator against gov.uk yourself. It shows the formula, the rates and the sources, so a disagreement is usually findable without anybody being told about it. Post also still reaches us, and is slower:
